Day 65: (500) Days of Summer

"You weren't wrong, Tom. You were just wrong about me."

First off, I want to bring to your attention that “(500) Days of Summer” is a movie that anyone can enjoy. Its boundaries reach far beyond the stereotypical “chick flick” feel that some think it has. Male or female, this film brings a very enjoyable story that all can appreciate. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel brilliantly portray their characters in two unforgettable roles, even receiving two Golden-Globe nominations.

Directed by Marc Webb, “(500) Days of Summer” is presented in a non-linear narrative format, jumping through the 500 days of Tom (Gordon-Levitt) and Summer's (Deschanel) relationship. The movie opens with a scene where Tom and Summer are sitting at a park bench, as Summer places her hand on Tom's, then quickly jumps to a different day withing the relationship.

The narrator of the the film explains how Tom is the kind of person who believes in true love, along with destiny. He knows that one day he is going to see the right girl to fall in love with before even saying a word to her. Tom and Summer first meet at their work place, a greeting card company in Los Angeles. Tom had been working there for a couple of years, but Summer had just moved in to the area when they first laid eyes on each other in the office. Of course, as most love stories go, Tom feels a connection between them and makes it his obligation to reach out to her, even though he is a shy person under these situations.

One night at work gathering, Tom and Summer start talking and they get into the subject of love. Summer explains to him that she doesn't believe love exists and isn't really interested in looking for it. Tom on the other hand, feels exactly the opposite, but still doesn't give up his hopes of being with her. As you could foresee, the two end up forming a relationship with each other and it seems to be a perfect fit. Not only do they enjoy each others company, but both are very happy on the inside. Despite the happiness, Summer makes it a point to keep reassuring Tom that she isn't looking for anything serious.

As time goes by, things begin to fade between one another. Summer still doesn't want things to get serious, but Tom feels completely opposite. This ends up causing their relationship to end. Summer stops working at the company and moves on, but Tom can't let go. He becomes extremely depressed and also ends up quitting his job. He tries his hardest to find a way to get her back in her life, but he is never able to find a secure place back in her heart.

Now I could continue to tell you everything that happens between Summer and Tom, but that wouldn't be fair to you. You should be able to explore their relationship on your own. You definitely wont regret taking the time to watch this movie, even if you don't like love stories. I personally have seen this movie two times, and both times I felt the emotions from the story take hold of me. Its something we can all relate to, as we try to endeavor to find the perfect match. Sometimes we just have to look a little more than others.
