Day 89: Mr. Nobody

"So Nemo, have you made up your mind? Do you want to come with me or do you want to stay with your father?"

This above quote sums up this movie. It deals with the thought of a persons choices and how they deal with them. Throw in some Super string theory, the nature of time, the Big Bang and you get Mr. Nobody. This movie is one of the best films I have ever seen. There are no gun fights, no thrills, no murders. Just drama with a narrative twist.

This film is non-linear and inter-dimensional. In the past week leading up to this review I watched the film 5 times! This makes sense which is a lot more satisfying than other "accurate" films such as Donnie Darko, don't get me started on the ending to that. I will present this plot structure in a linear explanation. And throughout this remember that the end is actually the beginning of the film.

A baby chooses, yes chooses, his parents. After a while we see his three wifes, he is still a boy. He has not married them but we have flash fowards that say he marries each of them. How, by different paths of course. As Nemo Nobody progressively gets older, he makes more live changing decisions. This all leads to 3 main different paths of life that we see. He marries 3 different women, lives considerably different lives. Some paths split up into more things but each path evidently leads to a different girl. In all there are 3 main directions Nemo's life takes, and about 12 distinct changes in all.

All of these paths originated from one impossible decision - to stay with his father or leave with his mother after they divorce. So Nemo, who is the last living mortal who will die of old age, is a big media subject. Because of his uniqueness in the world, he is getting interviewed about his life. Although it seems Nemo has lived separate lives that seemingly can't coexist, he remembers each path, even though they are contradictory. The payoff for this film is so beautiful and memorable that this film is easily the best film of 2009, and all time (to me at least). All sci-fi lovers, drama lovers, love story....lovers will ..um.. love this film. (too many love's). This is a great film.
