Day 39: Dakota Skye

"Sitting between in the past and your future doesn't mean you are in the present. "

Dakota Skye (Eileen Boylan) has an unusual super power. Now, this isn't the kind of super power that you get when you are bit by a spider or when you are exposed to a large amount of radio activity. She cant climb walls, fly across the country or shoot laser beams out of her eyes. Dakota's power is much different, but is very practical. Since the days of her early youth, she has been able to detect any lie that is thrown her way. Not only does she spot the lie, but she is also able to see the truth behind it. Whether it is just a little lie or something very serious, Dakota always knows the truth. The question though, is whether or not this is such a great power to have?
Besides her unusual super power, Dakota doesn't have much else in her favor. She is a seventeen year old girl who is completely unmotivated as she watches the world go by. She has a small group of friends but doesn't have anything in common with them. While her friends are busy studying for the SAT's and preparing for college, Dakota goes her own way and hangs out with her rock band boyfriend and his troublesome friends. She finds no joy in life and has nothing cut out for her future.

Dakota continues to live life from the bottom, until she meets someone that changes everything. During a late night in her boyfriends favorite diner, she meets a boy from New York named Jonah that was her boyfriends long time friend. After spending some time together, Dakota realizes that there is something different about Jonah, then pin points the fact that she hasn't picked up one lie from him. This was the first time Dakota has ever come across someone that hasn't lied at least once to her or someone else.

At first Dakota thinks that maybe her super power is fading, but she is still able to detect lies from everyone else. As both of them spend more and more time with each other, their relationship becomes tighter and tighter. One thing leads to another and before you know it they completely fall in love with one another. The problem here is that Dakota is still with her boyfriend, and cant seem to break her attachment with him. As the movie progresses, Jonah heads back home and leaves Dakota and his best friend behind.

Like most love stories, the movie ends with true love connecting. Even though it can seem predictable, the story to this movie is very touching. To see someone so down on life and unable to do anything for themselves to suddenly finding a spark in life always gives you a good feeling. Its also a movie that many teenagers can relate to withing their own lives because the story deals directly with what teenagers face in today's society. So many times independent films get overlooked, but I consider this movie a diamond in the rough and one not to be missed.
